Living With The Ocean, Swim With The Fishes Fish Bar

imageTaiwan is cradled by the ocean on all sides. To raise public awareness about the sustainable management and utilization of marine resources, a group of ocean-loving youths from Hualien founded the Fish Bar in 2016 to promote education, conservation, and sustainability of the oceans starting from the choice of "fish" on the dining table.
Over its 7 year journey, the Fish Bar gradually developed its “New Service for the Consumption of Wild Caught Fish' model. The model encompasses the 'Fish Bar Tidal Experience,' which promotes fish consumption and marine education at the source; the 'Fish Bar Fresh Catch' selection, which advocates for sustainable fishing practices at the production end; and the 'Fish Bar Platform,' which offers a wealth of knowledge and services regarding seafood to consumers.

Located about 500 meters off the coast of Qixingtan in Hualien, the Fish Bar adheres to the use of the passive method of fixed net fishing, while ensuring low-carbon and environmentally friendly practices that do not harm bottom-dwelling fish species. Moreover, by offering purchase prices higher than the market price, the Fish Bar has attracted the collaboration of fishers who employ more environmentally friendly fishing methods, becoming Taiwan's first brand to focus on the concept of "Local Sustainable Seafood." While eating it, all products shipped by the Fish Bar are combined with digital technology as a pioneering way to implement exclusive traceability labeling for wild-caught fish. With just one scan, consumers can access basic information, such as origin, fishing method, and storage method.

imageMoreover, a Fish Eating Experience Hall has been established in Qixingtan, Hualien along with the design of various educational materials and courses. It has trained over 100 Fish Education personnel who can conduct guided tours entirely in English, emphasizing the importance of “consumer choice” in local fisheries products. Through change, it works towards achieving marine conservation and sustainability.
